    PARIS - France's national police chief Monday said overnight riots sent a "shock wave" across France, as mainly Muslim youths injured three dozen officers and burned more than 1,400 vehicles in the worst night of violence since the unrest began.

    HOUSTON - A convicted double-murderer who spent three days on the run after slipping away from a Houston jail was recaptured some 200 miles away — drunk and talking on a pay phone.

    EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Rescuers scaled heaps of rubble to listen for survivors trapped in debris left by a tornado that ripped through communities in Indiana and Kentucky, killing 22 people.

    Attack on Ship Shows Pirates Emboldened

    NAIROBI, Kenya - The violent attack on a cruise liner off Somalia's coast shows pirates from the anarchic country on the Horn of Africa are becoming bolder and more ambitious in their efforts to hijack ships for ransom and loot, a maritime official warned Sunday.

    Gas Prices Return to Pre-Katrina Levels

    CAMARILLO, Calif. - Retail gas prices plunged an average of 23 cents nationwide in the past two weeks, marking a return to pre-Hurricane Katrina levels, according to a survey.

    TAMPA - It was as one-sided a loss as the Bucs have taken at Raymond James Stadium. The Carolina Panthers, currently the NFC's hottest team, led all the way and were superior in every phase of the game, winning 34-14.

    Miami Company's Cruise Ship Attacked By Pirates Off Somali Coast

    MIAMI - Pirates fired a rocket-propelled grenade and machine guns Saturday in an attack on a luxury cruise liner off the east African coast, the vessel's owners said. Two armed vessels approached the Seabourn Spirit about 100 miles off the coast of Somalia and fired as their occupants attempted to get onboard, said Bruce Good, a spokesman for Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corp.

    ST. PETE BEACH - An Ecuadorian couple visiting Florida were hit Sunday morning as they crossed Gulf Boulevard. The husband was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said. His wife was critically injured and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

    Smith trial set to begin

    The jury trial for the man accused of the murder of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia begins Monday morning. Joseph Smith, 39, is accused of abducting Brucia as she was walking back from a friend's house along Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota and later murdering her.
