    State of Emergency Begins in France

    PARIS - Rioters defied a state of emergency that took effect Wednesday, as they looted and burned two superstores, set fire to a newspaper office and paralyzed France's second-largest city's subway system with a firebomb.

    Democrats cleaned up big in off-year elections from New Jersey to California, sinking the candidate who embraced President Bush in the final days of the Virginia governor's campaign. They also turned back all four of GOP Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's efforts to reshape state government.

    JACKSBORO, Tenn. - Principal Gary Seale was shot while wrestling with a student who had opened fire in school and killed an administrator, then managed to get to the intercom and order a lockdown, helping to end the rampage, authorities say.

    Attack Kills Five Policemen in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide bomber detonated his car Wednesday near a police patrol in Baquoba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, killing five policemen and wounding five others, officials said.

    Justice Dept. Mulls Probe Into CIA Leak

    WASHINGTON - At the CIA's request, the Justice Department is weighing whether to open a criminal investigation into the leak of possibly classified information on secret prisons to The Washington Post.

    TOPEKA, Kan. - Revisiting a topic that exposed Kansas to nationwide ridicule six years ago, the state Board of Education approved science standards for public schools Tuesday that cast doubt on the theory of evolution.

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The nation's biggest oil companies will defend their combined quarterly profits of more than $30 billion on Wednesday at a Senate hearing where lawmakers are expected to demand why Americans face record heating bills this winter.

    'A city united:' Baker cruises to re-election

    ST. PETERSBURG - Mayor Rick Baker won an overwhelming victory over challenger Ed Helm Tuesday, a blowout signifying broad support for the incumbent's first term in office. Baker, 49, won 70 percent of the vote, besting Helm by a margin of 13,203 votes. It was the best showing in the history of the strong mayor system, which was instituted in 1993.
