    Bush Cheers Mongolia for Pushing Democracy

    ULAN BATOR, Mongolia - President Bush, buffeted by unrelenting criticism at home over Iraq, on Monday saluted Mongolia's "fearless warriors" for helping his embattled effort to establish democracy in the heart of the Middle East.

    Sharon Seeks Dissolution of Parliament

    JERUSALEM - In a bold gamble, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Monday asked Israel's president to dissolve parliament, pushing for a quick March election just hours after deciding to leave his hardline Likud Party and form a new centrist party.

    U.S. Forces Depart House in Northern Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. forces left a cordoned area around a house in the northern city of Mosul on Monday where eight suspected al-Qaida members died in a gunfight over the weekend. The White House said it was "highly unlikely" that terror leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was among the dead.

    Reports Cite Mall Shooting Suspect's Anger

    TACOMA, Wash. - A man accused of wounding six people — one critically — when he opened fire inside a shopping mall sent text messages saying he was about to show the world his anger, two newspapers reported Monday.

    CAIRO, Egypt - The Muslim Brotherhood won at least eight seats in the second round of Egypt's parliament elections as the Islamic group continued its strong showing despite widespread violence that marred the voting, according to partial results announced Monday.

    DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Emirates Airlines has placed an order for 42 Boeing 777 jets worth $9.7 billion at list prices, the airlines' chairman said Sunday, while China has signed a deal to buy 70 Boeing 737 airliners valued at $4 billion. Chinese airlines also will buy 80 more soon, the government said Sunday during a visit to Beijing by President Bush.

    Iran Raises Stakes on U.N. Inspections

    TEHRAN, Iran - Raising the stakes before a key vote by the U.N. nuclear agency, lawmakers approved a bill Sunday requiring the government to block inspections of atomic facilities if the agency refers Iran to the Security Council for possible sanctions.

    Twins Return to Egypt After Separation

    CAIRO, Egypt - Egyptian twins born joined at the top of the head returned to their home country on Sunday, still wearing protective helmets two years after a successful surgery in the United States to separate them.

    Smelly 'Corpse Plant' Drawing Crowds

    WASHINGTON - Its scent has drawn comparisons to garbage and spoiled meat, but that isn't stopping crowds from flocking to see _and smell — an unusual plant in bloom at the U.S. Botanic Garden.

    ST. PETERSBURG - An elderly woman is thankful to be alive after six men rescued her from her burning home. Helen Woodar says she heard her fuse box blow in her home on 45th Street South. After that, she saw smoke. The handicapped woman couldn’t get out of her home.
