    BAGHDAD, Iraq - A peace group blamed the United States and Britain for the abduction of four activists shown in an insurgent video, saying the kidnapping was the direct result of the occupation of Iraq.

    Bush to Address Iraq Policy

    WASHINGTON — President Bush on Wednesday will address the nation from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in the first of several speeches officials say is designed to reassure the public that the United States has a "plan for victory" in Iraq.

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court takes up its first abortion case in five years and returns to one of its most contentious issues on Wednesday when it considers a state law requiring notification of a parent before a minor can end her pregnancy.

    LOS ANGELES - Astronomers have discovered what they believe is the birth of the smallest known solar system. Peering through ground- and space-based telescopes, scientists observed a brown dwarf — or failed star — less than one hundredth the mass of the sun surrounded by what appears to be a disk of dust and gas.

    Milestone execution stopped

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Virginia Gov. Mark Warner on Tuesday halted the execution of a convicted murderer who would have been the 1,000th person put to death in the United States since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

    White House says troop reductions should be coming

    DENVER (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday Iraqi forces should be sufficiently trained to allow reduced U.S. troop levels in Iraq next year, but President George W. Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said it would be a huge mistake to pull them out now.
