    Bush vows victory before withdrawal

    ANNAPOLIS, Maryland - U.S. President George W. BPresident Bush yesterday said it is more important to win in Iraq than to withdraw, and promised that U.S. troops will begin to come home as Iraqis take greater control of their country.

    RAMADI, Iraq (Reuters) - Masked militants attacked a U.S. base and a local government building with mortars and rockets in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi on Thursday, before holding ground on central streets, residents said.

    DHAKA (Reuters) - A bomb blast near a Bangladesh court building where lawyers were marching to protest against violence killed one man and injured 25 on Thursday, police and witnesses said.

    Five militants die in Pakistan blast

    MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (Reuters) - Five militants, three of them Uzbeks, were killed in Pakistan's tribal belt on the Afghan border on Thursday when a blast destroyed the house they were staying in, a government official said.

    SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - California's Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger named a Democrat in a same-sex marriage as his chief of staff on Wednesday in an apparent political shift on the heels of a major electoral defeat.
