    Suicide Bombings in Iraq Show Decline

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - Suicide bombings fell in November to their lowest level in seven months, the American military said Thursday, citing the success of U.S.-Iraqi military operations against insurgent and foreign fighter sanctuaries near the Syrian border.

    Murtha assesses Army as 'broken'

    Rep. John P. Murtha is continuing his assault on the Bush administration's Iraq war policy, asserting this week that the U.S. Army is "broken, worn out" and "living hand to mouth." The Pentagon and a senior Republican senator sharply disagreed with his assessment. Mr. Murtha, senior Democrat on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, has emerged as one of his party's most vocal war critics, after voting to authorize force to remove Saddam Hussein.

    Democratic split on war pleases GOP
    The White House moved aggressively yesterday to exploit a growing rift among Democrats over the question of a pullout from Iraq, while other Republicans cheered the split as "chaos."

    BEIJING - The first U.N. investigator to visit China's detention centers in years found that torture is still common and accused the government of obstructing his work.

    SARASOTA, Fla. - Jurors recommended the death penalty Thursday for a mechanic convicted of killing an 11-year-old girl whose abduction was taped by a surveillance camera and broadcast worldwide.

    FORT WORTH, Texas - A sailor who was apparently trying to commit suicide Thursday shot and wounded himself and two superiors as they struggled for the gun in an effort to stop him, the base commander said.

    RALEIGH, N.C. - A convicted murderer was put to death Friday in the nation's 1,000th execution since capital punishment resumed in 1977.

    SINGAPORE - Singapore executed a 25-year-old Australian on Friday for drug trafficking, after he had a "beautiful last visit" with his family. Australia's leader protested the sentence, saying it would damage ties.

    PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - Gunmen hijacked a school bus carrying 14 children Thursday, and a U.S. missionary was abducted while driving outside Haiti's capital, police said.

    Bulgaria, Ukraine pull out of Iraq

    VIENNA, Austria - Bulgaria and Ukraine will begin withdrawing their combined 1,250 troops by mid-December. If Australia, Britain, Italy, Japan, Poland and South Korea were to reduce or recall their personnel, more than half of the non-American forces in Iraq could be gone by next summer.

    SARASOTA - The jury of 12 people needed a majority either voting for life in prison or death to return a sentence. The vote: 10-2 for the death penalty. That was the long-awaited decision Thursday night in a Sarasota courtroom as a clerk read the finding in the murder case of Joseph P. Smith. He was found by the same jury two weeks ago to have kidnapped, raped and murdered 11-year-old Carlie Brucia.

    Two arrested in Pasco ransom murder

    PASCO CO. - There's been an arrest in a ransom case that ended with one man dead. Pasco County deputies say Daniel Parbel and Christopher Wright killed John Benjamin. His body was found in a burned out SUV near Hays Road on September 25th.
