    Trial Delayed As Saddam Refuses to Attend

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein's trial was delayed Wednesday after the ousted president refused to attend the session, court officials said. Defense lawyers huddled with the judges in hopes of resolving the latest test of wills in the often-unruly trial.

    MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has every right to sell arms to Iran, its defense minister said on Wednesday, responding to mounting criticism of a $1 billion deal announced last week.

    Bush to Focus on Economic Progress in Iraq

    WASHINGTON - In defense of his war policy, President Bush will highlight U.S. efforts to help Iraqis overhaul their economy and rebuild their shattered infrastructure — an endeavor continually undermined by unrelenting violence.

    CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida's deputy leader called for attacks against Gulf oil facilities and urged insurgent groups in Iraq to unite to drive out American forces, according to a videotape posted on the Internet Wednesday.

    Fiery Plane Crash in Iran Kills 115 People

    TEHRAN, Iran - A military plane loaded with Iranian journalists crashed into a 10-story apartment building Tuesday as the pilot attempted an emergency landing after developing engine trouble. At least 115 people died, the Tehran police chief said.

    Some Megachurches Closing for Christmas

A massive search of nearly 600 acres of woods in Sumter County, Fla., was stopped Tuesday night after it was determined that Reddick likely stole a pickup and drove away from the initial search area.

    TAMPA - A Hillsborough County judge says he has no doubt a former teacher, accused of having a lesbian relationship with a student, will be able to get a fair trial. Jaymee Wallace, 28, was arrested in October on charges of lewd and lascivious battery on a female Wharton High School student.

    More information is surfacing about Lee George, the "red kettle robbery" suspect who drowned in a stolen car Monday in a creek off the Hillsborough River in Tampa. George, 41, of Clearwater had an extensive criminal record that dates back to 1984. He was married in 1986 to a woman who says he abused her and her son.
