    Bush praises improvements in Iraqi cities

    President Bush yesterday said setbacks in the Iraq war have not prevented steady progress on reconstruction and security efforts, especially in two cities once controlled by insurgents.

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide bomber who jumped on a bus after security checks had been completed detonated an explosives belt among passengers heading to a Shiite city Thursday, killing up to 30 people and wounding nearly 40, officials said.

    European ministers satisfied with Rice CIA explanation

    BRUSSELS - European foreign ministers voiced concerns to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice over the CIA prisons row in talks in Brussels, but were satisfied with her explanations, ministers said.

    Sources: Units' Deployment May Be Canceled

    WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has tentative plans to halt the scheduled deployment of two brigades to Iraq and instead send in smaller teams to support and train Iraqi forces in what could be an early step toward an eventual drawdown of U.S. forces, defense officials said Wednesday.

    Doctor: Don Ho Doing Well After Surgery

    HONOLULU - Legendary Hawaiian crooner Don Ho was moved out of intensive care at a Thailand hospital Wednesday and was doing well after an experimental procedure on his ailing heart, his doctor said.

    Lemieux Hospitalized With Heart Condition

    PITTSBURGH - Mario Lemieux has a new health problem to contend with. The Pittsburgh Penguins owner-player was hospitalized Wednesday for observation of an irregular heartbeat. Lemieux was monitored overnight in an undisclosed hospital and won't play Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild.

Police have identified the victims as 52-year-old Ikbalhusen Vakil, a native of India with a Florida ID card, and 35-year-old Ali Asghar, a native of Pakistan, who is a Canadian citizen.
