    Jet Slides Off Chicago Runway; Boy Dies

    CHICAGO - A jetliner trying to land in heavy snow slid off a runway, crashed through a fence and slid into a busy street, hitting one vehicle and pinning another beneath it. A 6-year-old boy was killed.

    Troop Levels in Iraq May Drop, Rumsfeld Says

    WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday he expects some 20,000 U.S. troops to return home from Iraq after next week's elections, and he suggested that some of the remaining 137,000 forces could pull out next year.

    Suicide Bomber Kills 32 on Bus in Baghdad

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide bomber detonated explosives Thursday inside a packed bus bound for a southern Shiite city, killing 32 people and wounding 44, police said. The blast pushed the three-day death toll from suicide attacks in the capital to at least 75.

    JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel called Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad "very dangerous" on Friday after he expressed doubt that the Holocaust occurred and suggested the Jewish state be moved to Europe.

    WASHINGTON - The Pentagon, in a major four-year decision, has decided to stick with having the capability of being able to fight two major conflicts at once.

    Witness: Passenger Agitated Before Shooting

    MIAMI - The passenger shot to death by air marshals in Miami had been agitated before boarding the plane and was singing "Go Down Moses" as his wife tried to calm him, a fellow passenger said Thursday.

    Northeast Braces for Snow

    A storm that wreaked havoc as it dumped as much as 10 inches of snow from Texas to Indiana barreled eastward on Friday, promising to bring more of the same.

    NEW ORLEANS - The city has fired 60 police officers and suspended more than 25 others who didn't show up for duty in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the city's police chief said Thursday as officials worked their way through a long list of disciplinary hearings.

    WASHINGTON - Congressional Republican leaders will press for passage next week of a new Patriot Act to combat terrorism, but a Senate filibuster looms on a measure that liberal and conservative critics alike say is a threat to individual liberties.

    Journal: Bad Vioxx Outcomes Not Disclosed

    TRENTON, N.J. - Authors of a study funded by Vioxx maker Merck & Co. failed to disclose in a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2000 that three additional patients in a clinical study suffered heart attacks while using the now-withdrawn painkiller, the journal wrote in an editorial released Thursday.
