    Iraq Will Close Borders During Election

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Iraqi government said Sunday it will close all borders, extend curfew hours and ban travel across provincial boundaries as part of stringent security measures to protect voters during Thursday's parliamentary elections.

    HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, England - Explosions at one of Britain's largest oil depots jolted an area north of London early Sunday, hurling multiple balls of fire into the sky, shattering windows and blanketing the area with smoke. Police said the blasts, which injured 36 people, appeared to be accidental.

    WASHINGTON - Former Minnesota Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy, whose insurgent campaign toppled a sitting president in 1968 and forced the Democratic Party to take seriously his message against the Vietnam War, died Saturday. He was 89.

    PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria - A Nigerian jetliner filled with schoolchildren going home for Christmas crashed Saturday while landing during a lightning storm in this delta oil port. At least 103 people were killed, officials said.

    TAMPA - Two people were found dead in a Tampa apartment Saturday afternoon. Investigators say they believe the two died of smoke inhalation, but no one reported a fire.

    Brandon soldier dies in Iraq

    A soldier from Brandon died Thursday in Baghdad when a bomb exploded near the convoy he was escorting. First Lt. Kevin J. Smith, 28, was killed after insurgents detonated an explosive as the convoy of engineers went along the Tigris River to a power plant.
