    SAN QUENTIN, California (Reuters) - California prison officials executed Stanley Tookie Williams, 51, the ex-leader of the Crips gang who brutally killed four people in 1979, early on Tuesday after top courts and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger rejected final appeals to spare his life.

    Iraqis Living Abroad Vote, Express Hope

    LONDON - Iraqi expatriates turned out to vote Tuesday in national elections, leaving voting stations with ink-stained fingers and expressing hope for the violence-torn country many fled during Saddam Hussein's brutal regime.

    Hike in Interest Rates Is Expected Today

    WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve is expected to hike interest rates another quarter point today. But after 18 months in which the Fed has been pushing rates higher to keep inflation under control, the central bank appears to be getting close to the end of its rate increase campaign.

    BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Gunmen assassinated a high- profile Sunni Muslim politician in western Iraq on Tuesday, two days before the nation votes for its first full-term parliament since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

    UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The 15-nation Security Council weighs its response on Tuesday to a U.N. investigation that accused Syria of hindering its probe into the slaying of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.

    BEIRUT (AFP) - Lebanon was grappling with fresh political turmoil as it mourned the killing of leading anti-Syrian journalist and lawmaker Gibran Tueni.
