    WASHINGTON - President Bush, addressing Americans from the Oval Office for the first time since he took the nation to war nearly three years ago, defiantly declared last night that "not only can we win the war in Iraq -- we are winning the war in Iraq."

    Cheney springs visit to 'newest democracy'

    BAGHDAD -- Vice President Dick Cheney yesterday staged a surprise visit to Iraq and today will attend the opening of Afghanistan's new parliament as part of a six-nation Middle East tour aimed at promoting democracy.

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide car bomb exploded outside a children's hospital in western Baghdad on Monday, killing at least two people and wounding 11, including seven policemen, officials said.

    House Opens Way for Oil Drilling in Arctic

    WASHINGTON - House lawmakers opened the way for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as one of their last acts of an all-night session Monday bringing their legislative year to a close.

    Sharon to Be Released From Hospital Tuesday

    JERUSALEM - Despite suffering a mild stroke, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon does not have any major health problems and will be released from the hospital Tuesday, his doctors said Monday.

    Israeli Leader Sharon Suffers Mild Stroke

    JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a mild stroke Sunday, but his condition quickly improved and his doctor said he was expected to be released from the hospital after a few days. Sharon aides said he was lucid and in control of the government.
