    Senate Passes Patriot Act Extension

    WASHINGTON - The terror-fighting USA Patriot Act may have a new lease on life. The GOP-controlled Senate on Wednesday approved a six-month extension of the USA Patriot Act to keep the anti-terror law from expiring on Dec. 31. President Bush gave it his grudging blessing.

    UK to record every vehicle trip in massive database
    Britain is to become the first country in the world where the movements of all vehicles on the roads are recorded. A new national surveillance system will hold the records for at least two years. Using a network of cameras that can automatically read every passing number plate, the plan is to build a huge database of vehicle movements so that the police and security services can analyse any journey a driver has made over several years.

    Saddam: U.S. Denials of Torture Are 'Lies'

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein insisted again Thursday that he had been beaten by his American captors, denouncing Washington's denials as "lies" and mocking President Bush's claim that Baghdad had chemical weapons.

    Action Still Required in Late-Year Session

    WASHINGTON - The year is almost over. Unexpectedly, the work in the Republican-controlled Congress is not. Without action by day's end, for example, a $29 billion Senate-passed package of aid for Hurricane Katrina and other storms could perish. So, too, $3 billion for low-income heating assistance.

    NEW YORK - New York commuters began Day 3 without subways and buses Thursday, and union leaders faced a court date to explain why they shouldn't be held in criminal contempt for halting the city's mass transit system.

    NYC Transit Strike Boosts Online Shopping

    NEW YORK - There's one silver lining to the New York City transit strike that has shut down buses and subways, while crippling many businesses. Online retailing — which has enjoyed robust sales this holiday season — is getting a further boost in the season's final days, as New York area shoppers turn to the Internet for last-minute buying.

    Senate Blocks Alaska Refuge Drilling

    WASHINGTON - The long fight over whether to drill for oil in an Alaska wildlife refuge is nowhere near an end. But attempts to open the refuge to oil development — one of President Bush's top energy priorities — received another setback Wednesday as the Senate refused to include the drilling measure in a must-pass defense spending bill.

    NTSB Finds Cracks in Seaplane's Airframe

    MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - A 1940s-era seaplane that lost a wing during takeoff and crashed within sight of the beach, killing all 20 people aboard, had undetected cracks in its airframe that apparently caused the aircraft to break up, federal investigators said Wednesday.
