    U.S. Rings in 2006 With Parties, Fireworks

    LAS VEGAS - Fireworks rained over the Las Vegas Strip as hundreds of thousands of revelers rang in 2006 with quickie weddings, parties at posh nightclubs and what organizers hoped was the world's largest simultaneous toast — 14,000 Chardonnay-filled plastic glasses raised just before midnight.

    German paper: U.S. planning strike on Iran
    The United States government reportedly began coordinating with NATO its plans for a possible military attack against Iran. The German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel collected various reports from the German media indicating that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are examining the prospects of such a strike.

    Insurgents Explode 12 Car Bombs in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - Twelve car bombs exploded around Iraq on Sunday, including eight in Baghdad that detonated within a three-hour window, as insurgents continued their attacks in the new year. The bombs injured at least 20 people but killed no one, police said.

    WASHINGTON - Before the next big hurricane's winds howl ashore, Homeland Security officials want an emergency communications network operating, emergency medical facilities treating patients, and teams dispatched to search for victims at the likely ground zero.

    Second Storm Slated to Hit Northern Calif.

    GUERNEVILLE, Calif. - Northern California residents braced for a second storm to hit the region Sunday, a day after the first sent rivers spilling into cities and mud sliding into homes and on highways.

    WASHINGTON - In his first year-end assessment of the federal judiciary, Chief Justice John Roberts urged Congress to increase judicial pay to help keep good judges on the bench and to recruit new ones.

    WASHINGTON - Medicare's prescription drug coverage rolls out Sunday, a benefit being hailed as the most significant advance in the program's 40-year history. Most senior citizens should see their medicine become more affordable because of the new coverage. Still, not everyone will save, and Medicare's 42 million beneficiaries have been patient, if not hesitant, about enrolling in a private plan.

    NEW YORK - There was more to celebrate than the ball dropping in Times Square for Dick Clark — the personality who's been ringing in the New Year for decades made his first television appearance since a stroke in late 2004.
