    Sharon fights for life

    JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, sedated and on a respirator, clung to life on Thursday after a massive stroke that is likely to create a huge vacuum in Israeli politics and the Middle East peace process. Surgeons at Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital said they stemmed the bleeding in the 77-year-old leader's brain in a seven-hour operation and described his condition as critical but stable.

    KARBALA, Iraq - Suicide bombers targeted Shiite pilgrims in the south and police recruits in central Iraq Thursday, killing almost 80 people in a stepped-up line of attacks.

    Report: 23 Killed in Mecca Hotel Collapse
    MECCA, Saudi Arabia - A hotel outside the Grand Mosque in Islam's holiest city collapsed Thursday as millions of Muslims converged for the annual hajj pilgrimage, and Al-Jazeera TV said at least 23 people were killed and 60 injured.

    Residents Seek Healing After Mine Disaster

    TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. - For nearly two days, the Sago Baptist Church sheltered family members praying for the safe return of 13 trapped miners. For a few hours, it was also a place of celebration after a mistaken report that all but one had miraculously survived.

    GM Is China's Top-Selling Foreign Automaker

    SHANGHAI, China - General Motors Corp. became China's top-selling foreign automaker last year, surpassing Germany's Volkswagen AG, after seeing its sales grow 35.2 percent to 665,390 vehicles, according to company figures released Thursday.

    PASADENA, Calif. - Vince Young and Texas are second no more to Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and Southern California.     U.S. Automakers See Sales Drop in 2005

    DETROIT - The auto industry finished 2005 in a familiar pattern, with U.S. market share continuing to slip from U.S. automakers to their Asian competitors. Japanese automakers reported the year's biggest sales gains.

    Man turns himself in after fatal hit-and-run

    ST. PETERSBURG - Police have made an arrest in a New Year's Day hit and run accident that left a woman dead. Sean Moody turned himself in to St. Pete Police on Tuesday. Investigators say he hit Linda Cohen as she crossed US 19 Sunday evening.
