    Senators Consider Alito's Record, Judgment

    WASHINGTON - Abortion was among a wide range of issues about which Judge Alito was questioned yesterday during about 10 hours of testimony. It was a day of some sharp exchanges but no major revelations that would doom his nomination to become the 110th justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, succeeding Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, a frequent swing vote on the court.

    Doctors Removing Sharon From All Sedatives

    JERUSALEM - Ariel Sharon's doctors on Wednesday hoped to remove the prime minister from all remaining sedatives after he moved his left hand for the first time, but hospital officials cautioned against being overly optimistic about his chances for recovery from a massive stroke.

    NEW YORK - The stock market, often considered a barometer of how investors feel about the economy's prospects, is now reflecting an optimism not seen in years.

    WHO Tries to Allay Fears Over Bird Flu

    ANKARA, Turkey - The World Health Organization on Wednesday tried to allay fears of a massive bird flu outbreak in Turkey, telling people not to panic but urging them to avoid contact with sick or dead poultry.

    Schwarzenegger Vows to Update License

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vowed to update his driver's license after police determined he had been riding his Harley Davidson illegally when he got into a minor accident over the weekend.

    TEHRAN, Iran - Iran broke U.N. seals on its nuclear enrichment facility Tuesday, pledging only to conduct research, but the international nuclear watchdog said Tehran also planned small-scale enrichment of uranium — a process that can produce fuel for nuclear weapons.
