    Alito Turns Aside Democrats' Criticism

    WASHINGTON - Long hours of Senate questioning seem to have done little to alter Samuel Alito's prospects for a seat on the Supreme Court, with Republicans confident that the conservative jurist is well-suited for the job while skeptical Democrats warn that President Bush's nominee could help overturn abortion rights.

    Turk Who Shot Pope John Paul II Released

    ISTANBUL, Turkey - The Turkish gunman who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981 was released from prison Thursday after serving more than 25 years in Italy and Turkey for the plot against the pontiff and the slaying of a Turkish journalist.

    Stampede Breaks Out at Hajj Pilgrimage

    MECCA, Saudi Arabia - Muslim pilgrims stampeded on the last day of a symbolic stoning ritual at the hajj on Thursday, and the Interior Ministry said an unknown number of people were killed. The Al-Arabiya network reported that dozens of pilgrims died.

    Two More Turks Test Positive for Bird Flu

    ANKARA, Turkey - Two more Turks tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu in preliminary tests, the government said Thursday, bringing the total number of human infections to 18. Both victims were from the stricken southeast, and had been in contact with infected birds, officials said.

    Doctors Aim to Wean Sharon From Sedatives

    JERUSALEM - With Ariel Sharon's condition gradually improving, doctors hoped Wednesday to completely remove him from sedatives soon — a process that could take a day and a half — so they can assess what brain damage he suffered from a massive stroke.

    Sarasota girl, 12, missing

    SARASOTA - A 12-year-old Booker Middle School student was reported missing since Tuesday, authorities said. Investigators say Mayra Erisuris Sandoval is "missing under suspicious circumstances," according to a Sarasota County Sheriff's Office statement. Mayra was last seen getting off a school bus in front of her school Tuesday, authorities said.

    Friend: Largo Man wanted to be serial killer

    LARGO - A 19-year-old Largo man was arrested Tuesday for the murder of two college students, Amber Marie Peck and John Parker. Authorities say Leo Lancing Boatman picked them at random and shot them to death with an AK-47 assault rifle while they were camping in a remote area of the Ocala National Forest.

    Hillsborough teacher faces attempted murder charge

    TAMPA - Tampa police say Betty Jean Johnson gave warning she would "get" her ex-boyfriend. The 29-year-old elementary school teacher made good on that promise Saturday morning, say investigators who accused her of recruiting three friends to attack Tommy Mathis, 33, at his regular weekend hangout, Gene's Bar.

    A deputy-involved accident in Pinellas County has left a motorcyclist dead. Investigators said 29-year-old Deputy Dennis Garvey was on routine patrol northbound on Seminole Boulevard. The motorcyclist, 50-year-old Charles T. Guarino, was making a left turn from southbound Seminole Boulevard onto eastbound Park Boulevard.

    DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - An explosion Wednesday at a wastewater treatment plant killed one worker and severely burned two others, authorities said. The men were working on a metal roof that had been damaged by last year's hurricanes, authorities said.
