    U.S. Airstrike Targets Al Qaeda's Zawahiri

    DAMADOLA, Pakistan - Ayman Zawahiri, the second-ranking al Qaeda leader and chief deputy to Osama bin Laden, was targeted by a deadly U.S. missile strike on a compound in Pakistan yesterday, but U.S. intelligence could not confirm whether he was killed, according to U.S. sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

    Iran Threatens to End Nuclear Cooperation

    TEHRAN, Iran - Iran threatened Friday to end surprise inspections and other cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog if it is referred to the U.N. Security Council over its nuclear program, and the president vowed his country won't be intimidated by sanctions.

    Augustine Volcano in Alaska Erupts Again

    ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The 4,134-foot Augustine Volcano on an uninhabited island about 62 miles west of Seldovia City erupted again early Saturday after blowing five times Friday, but the Alaska Volcano Observatory said it did not expect a heavy accumulation of ash.

    Bush Rejects Call to Shut Gitmo Prison

    WASHINGTON - President Bush rejected a suggestion by Germany's new leader that the U.S. close its prison at Guantanamo Bay, saying after a first meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday that the facility is "a necessary part of protecting the American people."
