    Tokyo Stock Exchange Forced to Close Early

    TOKYO - Japan's main stock market index tumbled for a second day Wednesday led by a sell-off in technology shares in a session that was halted 20 minutes early because of heavy trading volume amid a widening criminal investigation of the Internet startup Livedoor.

    Senate Democrat backs Alito for US Supreme Court

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ben Nelson of Nebraska, a moderate voice in the U.S. Congress, on Tuesday became the first Senate Democrat to announce his support for conservative Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, who is expected to be confirmed later this month by the full Republican-led Senate.

    France Rejects Iranian Request for Talks

    TEHRAN, Iran - France rejected Iran's request for more talks on the Islamic republic's nuclear program, saying Wednesday that Tehran first must suspend its atomic activities.

    Iraqis Hoping for U.S. Reporter's Release

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi authorities held out hope Wednesday that a kidnapped American reporter would be released. Meanwhile, police said gunmen killed at least 10 security guards and seized an African engineer in an ambush.

    Sharon Has Surgery for New Breathing Tube

    JERUSALEM - Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had surgery overnight to replace his breathing tube, the hospital where he is being treated said in a statement Wednesday. Sharon, who has been in a coma since suffering a stroke Jan. 4, remains in critical but stable condition, the statement from Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital said.

    NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - The mayor of New Orleans apologized on Tuesday for saying the hurricane-ravaged city would be rebuilt as a "chocolate" city and for blaming the storm on the wrath of God over U.S. involvement in Iraq.

    Nations Pledge Nearly $2B for Bird Flu

    LARGO - On a January day three years ago, Steven Aitken began a series of bank robberies that terrorized a community for months, gained nationwide attention and galvanized a countywide police task force. Tuesday evening, Aitken was strapped in a chair in a Pinellas courtroom, his face covered with a Hannibal Lecter-like plastic shield. His eyes were closed.     Missing Sarasota girl says she's safe

    The Sarasota Sheriff's Department said Mayra Sandoval called her parents Monday night and said she was safe. Detectives are working with the FBI and immigration authorities because they think the 12-year-old Sandoval is in Mexico in the company of a man in his 20s.
