    WASHINGTON - Fears of a military showdown over Iran's nuclear program escalated over the weekend as Israel reserved the right to attack its longtime enemy - and Iranians warned such a strike would be a "fatal mistake." Iran, with a president who has called for wiping Israel off the map, sparked international outrage earlier this month by breaking open seals the UN had put on some of the country's facilities capable of making nuclear material.

    Suicide Car Bomber Kills Three in Baghdad

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide car bomber killed at least three Iraqis Monday near the Green Zone housing the U.S. Embassy and Iraqi government, and the U.S. military said two American airmen died in a roadside bomb blast north of the capital.

    MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's intelligence services accused British embassy officials on Monday of spying in Moscow after state television said the diplomats had used a transmitter in a fake rock to try to secure state secrets.

    DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The U.S. Navy boarded an apparent pirate ship in the Indian Ocean and detained 26 men for questioning, the Navy said Sunday.

    PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Lawmakers in northwestern Pakistan on Monday demanded the government expel the American ambassador to Pakistan in response to a U.S. airstrike that killed 13 people.

    Halliburton Cited in Iraq Contamination

    WASHINGTON - Water supplied to a U.S. base in Iraq was contaminated and the contractor in charge, Halliburton, failed to tell troops and civilians at the facility, according to internal documents from the company and interviews with former Halliburton officials.

    Officials Vow Safer Conditions for Miners

    CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Spurred on by the deaths of 14 miners in West Virginia alone since the beginning of the year, federal, labor and state officials are pledging to make conditions safer for workers toiling underground in the nation's vast coal mines.
