    Iran Threatens Full-Scale Enrichment

    VIENNA, Austria - Iran upped the ante Monday in its nuclear standoff, warning that it will immediately begin developing a full-scale uranium enrichment program if it is referred to the U.N. Security Council.

    Bush hits foes who say spying broke the law

    President Bush yesterday took direct aim at Democratic critics on Capitol Hill who charge that a secret spy program he ordered in 2002 is illegal, saying, "If I wanted to break the law, why was I briefing Congress?"

    Ford Says New Plan Goes Beyond Job Cuts

    DEARBORN, Mich. - Ford Motor Co. says its new restructuring plan goes beyond job cuts and plant closings in its effort to restore North American profits. The nation's second-largest automaker also will try to reinvigorate its domestic brands as part of the turnaround.

    Session of Saddam Trial Canceled

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - The court trying Saddam Hussein cancelled the resumption of his trial Tuesday, delaying the session for five days, after some judges opposed the appointment of a new chief judge in a last-minute shakeup.

    CHARLESTON, W.Va. - West Virginia lawmakers approved a wide raft of measures aimed at improving safety in the mine shafts beneath the nation's second-largest coal producing state, an overhaul triggered by the deaths of 14 miners in two accidents this month.

    STRASBOURG, France - The head of a European investigation into alleged CIA secret prisons in Europe said Tuesday there was evidence the United States outsourced the torture of al-Qaida suspects to other countries and it was likely European governments knew about it.

    Serbia-Montenegro Train Crash Kills 44

    BIOCE, Serbia-Montenegro - Emergency teams on Tuesday searched for survivors in the wreckage of a passenger train that derailed and plunged into a river canyon outside the Montenegrin capital, killing at least 44 people and injuring nearly 200, officials said.
