    Hamas Win Unsettles Peace Process

    RAMALLAH, West Bank - Hamas won a huge majority in parliamentary elections as Palestinian voters rejected the longtime rule of the Fatah Party, throwing the future of Mideast peacemaking into question, officials from both major parties said Thursday.

    Police on Thursday captured a gunman and freed the last of the hostages he had taken when he tried to rob a bank in central California more than 10 hours earlier, an officer said. Sgt. Chris Douglass told Reuters officers seized the gunman after he asked police negotiators for cigarettes to be delivered to the Bank of America branch in Exeter, a small community near Fresno, California, where he was holding the last of his hostages -- a female bank employee.     Calif. Hostage Standoff Ends Peacefully

    EXETER, Calif. - A 10 1/2-hour bank siege ended early Thursday when police tricked the gunman by giving him cigarettes, then rescued his final hostage, who had been dragged back inside after an unsuccessful dash to safety.

    U.S. Military to Release Five Iraqi Women

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military said Thursday it would release five Iraqi women detainees, a move demanded by the kidnappers of an American reporter to spare her life. A U.S. official said the release had nothing to do with the kidnappers' demand.

    MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The sole survivor of the Sago Mine disaster that killed 12 men was able to respond to simple commands and follow movements with his eyes after emerging from a light coma, his doctor said.

    LOS ANGELES - Blacks who smoke up to a pack a day are far more likely than whites who smoke similar amounts to develop lung cancer, suggesting genes may help explain the racial differences long seen in the disease, researchers say.

    Study: Most Reservists Earn More in Combat
