    WASHINGTON - Samuel Anthony Alito Jr., the son of an Italian immigrant and a longtime lawyer, prosecutor and judge, is poised to take his place as the 110th Supreme Court justice behind what is expected to be the most partisan victory for a high court nominee in modern history.

    WASHINGTON - President Bush will deliver his fifth State of the Union address Tuesday after arguably the worst year of his presidency, looking to reinvigorate confidence in his leadership and the U.S. role in the world.

    ATLANTA - Coretta Scott King, who turned a life shattered by her husband's assassination into one devoted to enshrining his legacy of human rights and equality, has died. She was 78.

    Ex-Postal Employee Kills Six, Then Herself

    GOLETA, Calif. - A female ex-postal worker opened fire at a mail processing plant, killing six people and critically wounding another before committing suicide, authorities said early Tuesday.

    Tally of Human Bird Flu Cases Rises to 160
    GENEVA - The U.N. health agency on Tuesday raised to 160 its official tally of people worldwide who have been infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu virus after laboratory tests in London confirmed that at least 12 people in Turkey have been infected with the disease.

    UMass Imposes More Drinking Restrictions
    AMHERST, Mass. - No more drinking games at the University of Massachusetts. The school is cracking down on alcohol abuse on the Amherst campus with a list of new rules that go into effect this semester.

    Iran: Referral Means End of Diplomacy

    100th British Service Member Dies in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Iraq - A British soldier was killed in a roadside bombing Tuesday, the second member of the country's armed forces to die in Iraq in as many days and the 100th fatality since the conflict began nearly three years ago, officials said.
