    President Bush last night implored an unsettled nation to reject the idea that "our culture is doomed to unravel" and used his fifth State of the Union address to promise an end to America's oil "addiction."

    WASHINGTON - After a private welcome to his new job, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was confronted in his first hours with emergency appeals in three death row cases.

    Ahmadinejad Vows to Resist 'Bully' Nations

    TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's president lashed out Wednesday at the United States and vowed to resist the pressure of "bully countries" as European nations circulated a draft resolution urging that Tehran be brought before the U.N. Security Council for its nuclear activities.

    WASHINGTON - Cindy Sheehan finally got her invitation to see President Bush again, but before she set eyes on him at the State of the Union address, Capitol Police removed her from the gallery overlooking the House chamber.
